Breaking into an industry can often feel daunting. You may be a fresh-faced graduate or you may be changing careers, either way you've found yourself at the industry gates wondering how on Earth do you get in?

Luckily, we've found you some good company! These industry icons have been where you are and are sharing their insights to help you as you take your first steps in Adland.

1. Derek Walker

Founder of Brown and Browner Advertising, in The Drum.

"He [Paul Counsell, then chief executive of Cramer-Krasselt] went on to tell me to never hide who I am because although my experiences are different, it doesn't mean they are not as valuable as everyone else in the room."

2. Dara Treseder

Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Peloton in The Skimm.

3. Steven Bartlett

Founder of Social Chain in The High Performance Podcast.

"My advice is always don't do what 16,000 other media students are doing every year, which is leave university with a degree, go for an interview and go, there's my degree. Find thing that separates you from everybody else, write stuff for free for your local paper, record again and again and again, you either to camera if you want to be on a the telly, or using a microphone if you want to be on the radio, and then go to your friends and ask them to be searingly honest about whether it's shit or whether it's good, and keep on doing it. And then when you go in for your first interview, instead of just saying, well like everyone else, I've just done the same route, you can say, well I've done this off my own back. This is what I've done."

4. Shanice Mears

Co-Founder of The Elephant Room in Creative Lives In Progress.

"Play to your strengths. You can't take away the things you already know, and the cultural conversations you're having with your friends. These things are invaluable to a company."

5. Olivia Crooks

Founder of Madland Hack in Creative Access.

"Make contacts!! Use Linkedin - it is your best friend; add people, add groups, like posts, follow influential people - create a network!!"

6. Lou Nylander

Founder of Wildflowers of London and a marketing advisor for Good-Loop on Circl Leadership Development.
